笔者在教授《新编实用英语读写教程》（浙大出版社）第九单元Myths and Legends（神话传奇）中颇有感受，每个寓言故事富有深刻的寓意，通过角色的扮演，使学生在课堂教学中占主体地位，学生的积极性比以往有了明显的提高。由此，利用英语格言警句和谚语教学是一种新的尝试，通过“寓文化素质教育于语言教学之中”的理念来培养和挖掘学生的内在潜能，培养学生理解能力、表达能力、欣赏能力和运用知识的能力。
一、激发学生学习英语的兴趣
“兴趣是最好的老师”，有了兴趣，学习就会事半功倍。而兴趣不是与生俱来的，需要培养，学生学习的积极性是需要教师去激发的，因而教学方法的灵活运用是必不可少的。教师应该认真考虑学生的兴趣需要，找到学生的兴趣出发点，从而让英语学习成为一种有乐趣和找乐趣的开创性学习。语言学习的规律告诉我们，反复诵读优美的文句能激发学习的兴奋点，是语言学习不可或缺的环节。
在以往枯燥的语言点的讲解过程中，学生很容易失去对英语的兴趣，如果结合一些英语格言警句和谚语教学，那么就容易调动学生们的课堂积极性，能使枯燥的语言点讲授变得生动有趣，也能使枯燥的语言点便于理解。例如在第七单元教学“where there be….；there be…”的句型时，就可以利用Where there is a will，there is a way.（有志者事竟成）这个谚语作为经典例子展开反复训练，有利于学生积累较多的句型，供他们自己举一反三、模仿、套用和改写。如：Where there is air，there is life./Where there are difficulties，there are ways to get over them./Where there is opposition，there are rebellions./Where there are women，there are jealousy and suspicion.
二、利用英语格言警句和谚语教学有助于巩固和复习知识点
格言警句和谚语的语法结构正确、规范而严谨，教师可以结合与教材相关的语法知识，每天精选几句英语格言警句或谚语提供给学生，帮助学生巩固已学的语言知识。
例如，在讲解“trouble”这一单词时，要讲解trouble的意思和两种词性时，可以利用“Don’t trouble trouble，until trouble troubles you.”（车到山前必有路），这有助于学生掌握trouble的两个不同词性。
在对cry one’s heart/eyes out的词组讲解时，根据谚语It’s no use crying over spilt milk（覆水难收），可以拓展到全国英语应用能力考试B级的考点：it is no use/good/point doing sth.并举一反三地进行练习：it is no use trying to persuade him to give up smoking./It is no use arguing with him，he won’t take your advice./it is no use buying him such an expensive gift.
在“Health”单元的讲解中，可利用警句Health is not valued till sickness comes.（病时方知健康可贵）巩固not..until的结构。
在“family”单元的热身环节中，可导入朗朗上口的谚语：East or West，Home is the best.（金窝银窝，不如自家的草窝）。通过学习这句谚语，我校的一些学生还在英语文化节寝室话剧中就活学活用，喊出了East or West，Snow White is the best.这种压韵式的口号就是学生创新的体现。
三、寓文化素质教育于语言教学之中
语言是文化的载体，了解西方文化，吸取其精华是英语教学目的的一个方面。学习英语不能脱离英语文化，英语文化是英语正确得体的基础。我们学习英语，不仅要比较两种语言，还要比较两种语言所扎根的文化。而格言、警句和谚语是与民族特定的历史、经济、生活、风俗习惯等有着密切关系，透过英语格言警句谚语的表层，可了解它所承载的文化背景，感受中西文化的差异。
如：love me，love my dog.此谚语的表面意思是：“你若爱我的话，必须连我的狗一起爱”。因为西方人多有养宠物的习惯，尤以狗为甚。也就是说，如果你爱一个人，就必须爱属于他的一切。而汉语中的乌鸦带有“不吉利”之意，“爱屋及乌”的意思是如果爱一个人，就必须连他的缺点也一起爱。学过“every dog has his day.”（时来运转）进而了解dog一词在英语中毫无贬义。再如：Do Roman as in Roman.如果了解这个谚语的背景，我们就不难翻译“入乡随俗”了。又如习得“Every Jack must have his Jill”（人各有偶）中，Jack和Jill分别代表男子和女子，就不难解释或翻译下面的句子：She is already 38，but she still hasn’t found her Jack.
英语中有数以万计的格言、警句和谚语，其主要特点是言简意赅，用日常生活中的具体事例来说明带有普遍意义的道理。在英语教学中，教师若能恰到好处地运用英语格言警句及谚语，不仅有利于提高学生的学习兴趣和语言素养，而且有利于培养学生的欣赏能力和表达能力。传统意义上的语法教学仅局限于课文中的理解和运用，有一定的局限性，不利于对学生潜能的挖掘。利用格言警句和谚语进行教学既可以拓展学生的视野、增进知识，也可以培养学生对语言的理解能力，尤其能促进对汉语和英语两种不同语言的理解和驾驭能力，并促进实际运用能力。语言的功能在于交际，交际的两个主要方面是理解（他人）和表达（自己）。表达能力的高低与语言信息的输入量和储存量有着密切的关系。同样，熟读和记忆大量的英语学习材料对于英语学习者来说也是很有必要的。

一、英汉互译中文化的对应与不对应
1.英汉互译中文化的对应表现。语言是文化的主要载体和表现形式，不能封闭，应具有开放性和发展性，不仅可在本国内的传承，更是能够流传到其他国家，即使国与国之间存在着一定的差异性，但是也不能完全隔断文化的传播与交流。目前，汉语是世界上人数应用最多的语言，英语则是世界上应用范围最大、最广的语言，这两种语言的使用群体都十分广泛。而且随着经济的快速发展，国和国之间的交流和往来越来越频繁，不同国度之间的文化交流和日益紧密，这就导致汉语与英语在互译过程中，需考虑到文化层面的因素，认真对待英汉两种语言在文化中的对应表现和相同性，让英汉互译实现文化的对应。
比如，任何一门语言在描述自然形态时都是站在客观角度上的，无论是汉语还是英语，都不可能脱离自然界，违背其发展规律，这是自然界自身文化内涵的真实反映。在英汉互译自然景观时，诸如：黄山翻译为Mount Huang；The Alps翻译为阿尔卑斯山；颐和园翻译为Summer Palace；Great Lakes翻译为北美五大湖等，由于这些自然景观都是客观存在的，在互译过程中文化的对应性和统一性比较高，几乎没有干扰。同时，在英汉互译中，经常会遇到大量的自然文化景观，除自身规律形成之外，也有人文自然景观，这些属于人类的共有文化，并不是某个国家的特有文化，在文化共性上一般具有普遍意义，对应关系也较为明显。像我国的故宫、龙门石窟，国外的Eiffel Tower、Buckingham Palace等。
2.英汉互译中文化不对应表现。汉语和英语的历史形成和发展毕竟差异较大，来自不同的国家和地域，文化经过长时间的积累让语言各具特色，在互译过程中不可能完全突破障碍，让两种语言进行绝对对应和互通，主要原因在于英汉两种语言之间的文化擦愿意，导致不对应现象的出现。在英汉互译过程中文化不对应现象有多种表现，其中在不同文化背景下人们的生活习惯有所不同，在语言表达方面存在着较大的代沟。像我国对红色情有独钟，在遇到喜庆之事或表达美好愿望时，一般都会选择红色。但是在英语文化背景中，红色即为red只是纯粹的一种颜色代名词，并没有其它什么特殊含义。
同时，不同文化背景下人们的价值观念也不同，在判断语言意思方面存在着不对应性。诸如，我国向来强调集体主义，注重团队协作的力量，个人主义不受推崇；但是在英语文化内涵中，强调更多的是个人英雄主义的力量，这一点可以从国外的影视作品中明显体现出来。这种价值观点的不同，导致英汉互译中出现不对应性。另外，语言在发展过程中自身也会出现异化现象，原来的意思发生变化，这也是影响英汉互译文化不对应现象的原因。诸如：“奇葩”原意指的是美丽而奇特的花朵，经常用来比喻不同寻常的优秀文艺作品或非常出众的人物；而在现代则比喻某人或某事物不落世俗、个性十足，或指向一些正常人行为和思维以外充满个性的行为，如果不了解汉语文化的转变很难正确翻译。所以，翻译者应置身于英语和汉语两种文化背景中，做好相互衔接的关联工作，减少误译现象的出现。
二、英汉互译中修辞的对应与不对应
1.英汉互译中修辞的对应表现。英汉互译中修辞的对应可分为多数对应与少数对应。多数对应指的是：汉语和英语语言运用到修辞大多数是相近或相通的，这样在互译过程中语言的修辞方式具有明显的对应性，通过对修辞的运用，汉语和英语的表述差别不大。比如，爱屋及乌运用的修辞手法是比喻，因为爱一个人而连带爱他屋上的乌鸦，比喻爱一个人而连带地关心到与他有关的人或物。在翻译为英语语言时，则为：love me，love my dog，只不过将乌鸦替换为dog，但是修辞手法仍然保持着一致性，即为比喻，通过互译句子的自身结构并没有改变，这就是所谓的典型性修辞多数对应现象。
在英汉互译中修辞手法少数对应问题，主要强调的是汉语和英语两种语言不是绝对不对应，也不是多数对应，而是存在着少数对应关系，有着一定的相同地方，可以实现这两种语言的部分衔接，以此促使修辞在两种语言互译过程中存在对应关系。例如，金蝉脱壳指蝉脱去外壳的蜕变，比喻制造或利用假象脱身，使对方不能及时发觉，或比喻事物发生根本性的变化，也是对比喻修辞手法的应用。在英语电影《Escape Plan》中，翻译成汉语也叫“金蝉脱壳”，在翻译中并没有看到cicada和shell，从这两个单词的字面意思来看是“逃跑计划”。不过却能够清晰看出这两者之间的相似关系，都指的是“逃跑”，从而联想到均是对比喻修辞的应用，存在着少数对应关系，其中“Escape”和“脱”是完全对应，都是“它们”的最终目的。
2.英汉互译中修辞不对应表现。无论是汉语还是英语在修辞手法方面都存在着一定的隐性特征，在这种情况下，即使不在英汉整体互译中，仅仅在自身语言表达方面就极易让人产生误解。所以，在汉语和英语进行互译时，受修辞手法的影响和存在，往往会到这在实际翻译过程中出现不对应的现象，并且是绝对不影响，这样的互译显然会影响到翻译结果的准确度和正确性。毕竟汉语和英语两种语言受到各自国家不同风俗习惯、文化背景的影响，不少价值观念已经在各自语言英语者的思想意识中形成常态，对于他们来说更是当作普遍性认知来看待，特别是汉语博大精深，在修辞方面翻译成英语较为困难，导致不对应现象的出现。
例如，在汉语知识体系中成语文化源远流长，像冰魂雪魄的含义是：如冰的透明，雪的洁白，比喻人品质清高纯洁；火树银花中的火树是火红的树，指树上挂满灯彩，银花即为银白色的花，指灯光雪亮，形容张灯结彩或大放焰火的灿烂夜景；燕妒莺惭形容女子貌美如花，燕见之心生妒忌，莺对之自任惭愧；兔死狐悲，表示对同盟的死亡或不幸而感到伤心。针对这些成语中常见的比喻和拟人风格，对于汉语学习者来说能够轻松理解，但是在英语翻译中难以找到具体的修辞手法和模式，如果进行直接翻译的话将会使成语丧失原味，甚至闹出笑话。而且对于英语学习者来说更是难以理解，这就是修辞不对应现象的表现。同理，一些英语中的句子或俗语也有着其自身的语言规律，在修辞手法方面如果直接翻译为汉语，同样会令人贻笑大方，严重影响翻译效果。
三、英汉互译中风格的对应与不对应
不同语言在描述过程中能够体现出不同的语言风格和色彩，这是语言表现自身丰富内涵的具体形式，正是由于各种语言在具体描述过程中存在着不同的风格色彩，才导致它们的表述存在明显差异。为此，在英汉互译过程中需全方位把握汉语和英语语言的不同风格，只有这样，才能够紧紧抓住语言的本质和内在核心，在英汉互译中无论是对应还是不对应，都可以成为积极的翻译因素。英式幽默和中式幽默风格存在着较大的差异性，汉语中的幽默可能会在英语中成为忌讳，英语中的幽默同样会面临着被汉语风俗习惯所不容，这就要求在英汉互译中做好语言风格的把握工作，尽量实现对应和减少不对应现象的出现。
同时，在进行英汉互译时需以翻译内容的本意为切入点，以语言背景文化为出发点，增强中英两种不同风格文化之间的交流，只有这样，才能够真正实现语言风格和文化之间的互通，进而促进互译中对应关系的实现。不过对于在探究英汉互译中遇到不对应问题时，需从两种语言的自身风格特点着手，客观看待和总结问题，让互译结果更加合理恰当。在英汉互译中风格对应的现象有很多，诸如：留得青山在，不怕没柴烧――Where there is life，there is hope；茅塞顿开――be suddenly enlightened等。不对应现象则有：糖衣炮弹――sugar-coated bullets；唯利是图――draw water to one’s mill等。只有把握好语言风格，才能提升互译工作的质量。
四、总结
当今社会经济形势下，英汉互译对两国交流和经济贸易来说十分关键。在英汉互译过程中，需了解双方国家语言的文化、修辞和风格，只有做到“知彼知己”，准确把握语言的对应和不对应，才能够进行更好的互译，翻译出来的结果才更加符合实际需求。

英语中有许多格言，和汉语类似，格言的含义往往与字面意思不同，是对字面意思的一种延伸，这些格言有很多和宗教文化有關。
基督教是西方最主要的宗教之一，其经典《圣经》则被教徒奉为圭臬，英语语言中很多格言与圣经有关。比如“atreeisknownbyit’sfruit”这句话在英语地区广为流传，其字面意思是“看果实就知道这是一棵什么树”。而在英语语言中，这句话表达的意思是其引申义：观其言知其行。另一句“samewayasyouwouldliketobetreated”字面意思是“你会尝试别人喜欢的方式”其引申义则为己所不欲勿施于人。这种方式在英语中十分常见，深刻体现了西方宗教文化对英语语言的影响。
1.2英语语言中的宗教文化人名、地名
英语中，有大量重复的人名、地名，看似普通，其实很多都是源自于西方宗教。比如我国历史上著名军阀唐继尧，其名字中“继尧”即是继承上古人物唐尧之意，这种情况在英语中也十分常见。
现代美国人中，很多人名“保罗”，比如NBA球星保罗·乔治，保罗即西方宗教文化中耶稣的门徒之一。此外，耶稣还有12门徒，即西门彼得、安得烈、雅各布、约翰、腓力、巴多罗买、多马、马太、小雅各布、达太、西门、犹大，基督教的新教和旧教文化中，12门徒的名字不同，但很多都被西方人所用，比如约翰等。
此外，英语中很多地名也和宗教文化联系密切，美国旧金山，又名弗朗西斯科、圣弗朗西斯科，这一地名的来源就是西方宗教人物，同样，圣安东尼奥也来来源于宗教，突出体现了宗教文化对英语语言的渗透。
1.3英语语言中有宗教文化色彩的俗语
在观看英语原声电影中，经常可以听到“mygod”、“Jesus”等词汇，这两个词都来自于宗教，均是上帝之意，对俗语的渗透也是西方宗教文化在英语语言的重要体现方式。
不同于格言，俗语往往在生活中被大量使用，经典好莱坞故事片《教父2》中，参议员吉尔瑞在看到尸体后，掩面痛哭，口中所说“Jesus”即是一种宗教文化的渗透，是一个表达自己的悲伤、痛苦情绪的词语，意为“上帝”，字面意思和引申义相同，但在引申义中含有明显的感情色彩。
而在大部分英语原声电影中，出现一些恐惧、混乱镜头时，往往会听到“mygod”一词，字面翻译，是“我的上帝”、“天呐”的意思，引申义也相同，但和“Jesus"的表达效果类似，“mygod”也带有十分强烈的感情色彩。对俗语的渗透，是西方宗教文化在英语语言中的一个重要表现。
2西方宗教文化对英语语言的影响
2.1丰富了英语语言
研究西方历史，往往会发现大量的宗教元素，基督教的起源，被认为是在西元一世纪罗马帝国的巴勒斯坦省，也就是现在中东的巴勒斯坦、以色列地区，随后迅速得到传播。欧洲的大部分地区该信基督教，其后由于宗教问题，西方爆发了多次战争、革命运动，包括德国内战、十字军东征等，宗教的影响可见一斑。也正是由于这种影响，宗教文化深深植入西方人的生活，丰富了包括英语在内的多种语言。
在俗语、地名、人名、格言等方面均可以看到宗教元素，这使英语语言大为丰富。1611年，当时的英国国王詹姆士确定了标准版本的圣经，并在英国大力推行，英国是新教国家，但经过了多次运动、战争后，也不再排斥旧教，因此詹姆士确定版本的圣经得到了全国的认可。在随后的时间里，有超过5000个词语被英国人从圣经中挑选出来，应用到日常生活中，英语的语言表现力进一步增强。16世纪末期，西班牙从北美殖民地开赴欧洲的运宝船屡遭英国海盗骚扰，由于英国官方参与了分赃，对西班牙的控诉不予理睬，愤怒的腓力二世先后发动五次远征，也就是著名的无敌舰队之战，但均以失败告终。英国人渐渐取得了海上霸权，并在随后200年间成为世界上最大的殖民国家。随着英国殖民运动的兴起，詹姆士版的圣经也开始广为传播，西方宗教的影响力迅速扩大，亚洲、美洲、非洲、大洋洲等均不成程度开始受到西方宗教文化、英语的影响。
美国历史上著名的总统林肯即深受宗教文化影响，林肯往往喜欢在演说中加入一些宗教元素。由于美国人广泛接受了基督教文化，而且以英语为官方语言，林肯的演说因此而变得更加生动，林肯的代表作《葛底斯堡》演说，即添加了宗教元素，比如“wecannothallow”一句，这句话的意思是“我们不能使他神圣”，林肯在演说中强调了战争的悲壮和意义，哀悼了亡者，这样的演说目的在于感染到场的美国人，而并非理性说教。当带有感情色彩的宗教语言出现后，其感染力得到了很大提升，林肯演说的目的也就达到了。对英语语言丰富性的提升，是西方宗教文化对英语语言的重要影响。
2.2强化了英语语言的表达能力
在世界各国、各地区、民族使用的语言中，英语并非表现力最强的，法语十分婉转、德国则显得铿锵有力，汉语特色是字母和汉字的两种表达方式，日语、汉语中则包括大量汉文化特色。在长期的发展中，英语受到了西方宗教文化的影响，其表达能力获得了一定程度的提升。
如前文所说，在林肯的演说中应用了宗教元素，演说效果获得明显提升，这只是宗教文化的表现方式之一，其他的俗语、地名、格言中，宗教文化的出现频率更高。由于宗教本身是一种可以触碰的、感受的文化，带有一定的煽动性，将其融入到语言中后，语言的表现力也得到了加强。
比如“Cannotyouseethewritingonthewall”这句话的字面意思是，“你看不到墙上写了什么吗”引申义为“厄运即将降临”这句话与宗教的联系可以追溯到罗马时期。西元70年，希律王通知罗马时期，大规模镇压中东犹太人起义，罗马统帅迪杜下令烧毁了犹太教的圣殿，以显示罗马的强大，耶路撒冷等地的几十万犹太人被杀、更多犹太人被驱逐，直到罗马分裂，各地的犹太人才被允许在安息日回到耶路撒冷，幸存的犹太人遂返回圣殿遗址的一处墙体边缘，哀悼死难者，面墙而哭，这就是哭墙的由来。“Cannotyouseethewritingonthewall”中的“wall”即是指哭墙，而厄运即将来临，也是对哭墙文化、宗教文化的一种延伸。
类似的语言在英语中还有许多，均是在宗教文化的基础上，将相关词语、短句融入英语中，取其引申义，这些词语、短句大大提升了英语的表现力。
